On 22 September 2025, the courtyard of Escola Secundária Sebastião da Gama, in Setúbal, gave way to a 50 m² mini-forest. In a single day, students, teachers and partners planted around 150 native trees and shrubs following the Miyawaki method.
The planting brought together Lisnave, ENA — the Arrábida Energy Agency — and Setúbal City Council, but responsibility did not stop with the adults: several 8th grade classes took on the role of guardians of the forest, a commitment that carries on long after planting day.
This island has one more distinctive trait: it was born within the "Osaka in Portugal" programme, part of Expo 2025, connecting this schoolyard in Setúbal to an international framework of cooperation between Portugal and Japan, the country where the Miyawaki method originated.
