This was the second island and the first one in Lisbon, at Escola Superior de Comunicação Social (ESCS), in Benfica, right next to the 2ª Circular ring road. The location was not chosen at random: it sits less than 5 km from the office of Noesis, the partner that made the project possible, and it solves two problems at once. On the outside, it softens the constant traffic noise reaching the campus. On the inside, it creates a small green island that improves the soil and increases the ecological area of the university.
In 50 m², 150 native trees and shrubs were planted following the Miyawaki method, with the aim of turning that concrete corridor beside the ring road into an ecological corridor inside the city.
The planting brought together 65 volunteers — students, teachers and Noesis employees, who also brought their children along on the day. Noesis not only gathered people but funded the project, and the day was further supported by Valorsul and NAM Mushroom Farm.
